Court okays school budget reforms to replace discriminatory system
By Or Kashti, Haaretz Correspondent

The High Court approved Sunday an Education Ministry plan to gradually implement new budgetary reforms to schools, drawn up after the judiciary ruled the old system unfairly allocated funds.

As a result, some 1,500 teachers who work in regions branded as "peripheral," such as the Negev and areas bordering with the Gaza Strip and Lebanon, and risked losing their jobs will remain employed.

Ministry officials have asked local authorities to post letters to teachers who have received notices terminating their employment, notifying them of the letters' nullification.

In a meeting held Sunday, Education Ministry officials asked the court to defer the implementation of the reforms to September 1st.

A panel of High Court justices headed by High Court President Dorit Beinisch accepted the ministry's request to cut 3 percent off a pay-rise given to high school teachers in those peripheral areas.
