Last update - 06:34 12/06/2007 IBA: English-language radio to stay, TV news future unclear By Daphna Berman The Israel Broadcasting Authority decided Monday not to cancel its English-language radio news broadcasts, despite earlier threats due to cost-saving measures. The future of IBA television news broadcasts, however, remains unclear. The IBA said Monday that radio shows and programming that are considered to be a cornerstone to public broadcasting would remain untouched. But the authority has yet to decide what constitutes a "cornerstone." "There has not been a specific decision regarding the English news," IBA spokesperson Linda Bar said. "One could assume that the English news will be considered part of the 'cornerstone,' but that's still unclear. We are waiting until next week." Advertisement IBA English News editor Steve Leibowitz expressed his concern over the possible closure. "We're the one [English-language] voice that presents an Israeli perspective on television, and now they want to eliminate that voice," Leibowitz said. "It doesn't make any sense, especially considering the other options like CNN, Al Jazeera and the BBC." The potential closure of the English news has created a fury of protest among local English speakers.
