Thousands dance in streets at annual Tel Aviv gay pride parade
By Haaretz Service

Thousands of people on Friday attended Tel Aviv's gay pride Parade, Israel Radio reported.

The event, first marked in Tel Aviv in 1998 with a small gathering on Sheinkin Street, has since grown into a colorful celebration that draws tens of thousands of people every year.

The parade's route started at Rabin Square, followed Ibn Gavirol, Arlozorov and Hayarkon streets and ended in a beach-side party at Gordon Beach.

Traffic and parking was prohibited along the route since early Friday morning, and only reopened at 16.

While in Tel Aviv the parade has become a regular fixture on the municipal calendar, Jerusalem's gay pride parade has been a matter of fierce contention, pitting gay and civil rights groups against a coalition of Jewish, Christian and Muslim organizations.

Last year, Jerusalem's parade was almost canceled due to fears of violence from anti-gay protestors.

In a last minute compromise the event was eventually downscaled and held in a closed stadium.
