The Central Elections Committee (CEC) discussed Tuesday how to respond to Knesset Speaker Dalia Itzik's intention to remove the committee's offices from the Knesset. One of the possibilities raised was disbanding the committee in protest.

The significance of Itzik's order is that if immediate elections should be called, the committee would have no place to work in order to hold the elections within 90 days, in accordance with the Knesset Elections law.

Central Elections Committee Chairman Justice Eliezer Rivlin threatened to resign over the matter Tuesday, possibly following suit after the Director General of the CEC, Tami Edri, left her postion last week.

Edri protested that if the Knesset decided to hold elections it would be impossible to do so as the committee would not have anywhere to work and she was not ready to accept the responsibility for that. The treasury estimates the construction of CEC offices will cost NIS 50 million; this, for a structure that would only be used two months every four years.

According to the law, the CEC must be ready to hold elections at any time with 90-days' notice.
