Police arrest longtime wanted top Fatah militant in West Bank
By Amos Harel and Avi Issacharoff, Haaretz Correspondents and Haaretz Service

A special police force arrested a longtime wanted senior Fatah militant in central Ramallah in the West Bank on Monday.

Khaled Shawish is suspected of involvement in many shooting attacks on Israelis over the years, and has confessed to taking part in the murder of Benjamin and Talya Kahana in December 2000.

Several years ago Shawish sustained an injury during a gunbattle with Israel Defense Forces troops and has since been confined to a wheelchair. Shawish has been hiding from the Israeli authorities in Ramallah for a long time, but on Monday was arrested while driving his jeep. The IDF believes that he has recently been operating terrorist cells that carried out shooting attacks near Ramallah.

Earlier Monday, the IDF arrested two top Fatah militants in the West Bank city of Jericho. The IDF arrested one while he was hospitalized.

Palestinian sources reported Monday that the IDF arrested Dawd Zubeidi, brother of Zacharia Zubeidi, overnight at the Jenin refugee camp in the West Bank overnight. The sources said the IDF had also detained the daughter of one of the Hamas officials currently held in Israel.

IDF troops arrived in Jericho Monday morning to arrest Na'al al-Sarouki who is suspected of planning terror attacks on Israel. After his arrest, a gunbattle broke out between the IDF and another militant, and al-Sarouki was wounded in the crossfire. He then escaped to seek treatment at a hospital. Palestinian sources reported that the IDF troops pulled him out of the operating room in efforts to re-arrest him, but the IDF maintains that it had been Palestinian authorities that removed al-Sarouki from the hospital. He was subsequently taken to a hospital in Israel for treatment.
