Peres: Israel to present counter-proposal to Arab peace plan

The government of Israel will present a counter-proposal to the Arab peace initiative recently reaffirmed by the Arab League, Vice Premier Shimon Peres said Sunday during a panel debate on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict at the World Economic Forum in Jordan.

He said that Israel's formal proposal would take into account the details of the Arab plan, which calls for a full Israeli withdrawal from territory captured in the 1967 Six-Day War in return for normalized ties with the Arab world.

The proposal would also outline Israel's opposing position, Peres said.

The secretary-general of the Arab League, Amr Moussa, responded positively to Peres' comments, and expressed the League's interest in such a proposal.

Peres said that Israel was interested in discussing the issue with representatives of the Arab states, in particular Saudi Arabia, who produced the original draft of the plan in 2002.
