Haifa man charged with imprisoning and raping Tel Aviv woman
By Fadi Eyadat, Haaretz Correspondent

40-year-old Haifa resident Raphael Yohayeb was charged Wednesday with aggravated sexual assault, injury and false imprisonment, based on the testimony of the victim, who allegedly jumped from a third-story window to escape captivity.

An indictment issued in Haifa District Court describes how Raphael Yohayeb, raped and sodomized a 23-year-old Tel Aviv woman in his apartment in the Hadar neighborhood of Haifa.

The accused apparently met the woman by chance and invited her to his apartment. When she came in, he hit her in the head with a metal object, threatened to kill her and then raped her while beating her. Following the rape he refused to let her leave the apartment.

The next morning, at 6:30, the victim jumped out of a window of the third-floor flat, breaking several bones in the fall.

According to the indictment, the accused brought the young woman back up to his apartment with the help of a neighbor and called Magen David Adom. She was rushed to Rambam Medical Center's intensive care ward, where she remained unconscious for nearly two weeks.

The police initially thought the young woman had tried to commit suicide, but when she regained consciousness she told them what had happened to her.

Haifa police chief Commander David Ben-Atia said, "We have put our best detectives on this case. This is very cruel and inhuman behavior. Ben-Atia said he hoped justice would be served to the fullest.
