IDF officer laments troops' role in W. Bank scuffle with activists
By Haaretz Service

Israel Defense Forces Colonel Yehuda Fuchs admits he was mistaken in his decision not to call for reinforcements during last week's scuffle with leftist activists in the West Bank, Channel 10 reported Sunday.

According to a report written by Fuchs, the Yehuda Brigade commander expressed regret over the "allocation of forces" that dealt with an illegal protest organized by the Anarchists Against the Wall group.

He added that had he understood the nature of the incident he would have called in the police, who usually deal with civilian protests.

During the incident, less than ten IDF Reserve soldiers tried to disperse dozens of protesters who had forcibly removed an army road block. Soldiers claim they repeatedly called police and border police to deal with the protesters, but they failed to arrive.

Fuchs wrote that the brigade failed in its assessment of the "sophisticated provocations" carried out by the AAW, which IDF soldiers are not used to dealing with. AAW activists and Palestinians removed three other road blocks in addition to the one where the scuffle took place.

However, Fuchs rebuked the soldiers that acted violently towards the protesters, particularly Captain (res.) Yair whose actions he wrote were "unbefitting an IDF officer."

Yair was captured on camera assaulting a protester and beating him with his rifle, sparking public outrage against his rough treatment of the AAW activist.

Instead of amending the anthem, more money should be invested in orchestras.
