MK al-Sana: AG's silence proves Arab MKs' phones are tapped
By Yoav Stern, Haaretz Correspondent

MK Talab al-Sana (Ra'am-Ta'al) said Sunday that Attorney General Menachem Mazuz's refusal to respond to whether the security services have tapped Arab MKs' phones proves the phones are indeed tapped.

Al-Sana added that Mazuz's refusal to answer questions on the subject worried him deeply.

Arab MKs have voiced concern over possible probes being carried out against them by security forces after a secret investigation against former MK Azmi Bishara culminated in him fleeing the country, with police threatening to arrest him upon his return on allegations of treason.

Al-Sana told Haaretz last week that, according to information he had received, the telephones of several Arab MKs have been tapped.

In a letter to Mazuz and Knesset Speaker Dalia Itzik (Kadima), al-Sana demanded the security services reveal whether they they were listening to phone conversations of other Arab MKs.

Mazuz's aide, lawyer Ran Nizri, responded in a letter that "for obvious reasons, we cannot reply to such a question."

Of the Bishara investigation, Nizri wrote that every phone tap of an MK requires the approval of the attorney general and an order by a Supreme Court judge.

"Every infringement of an MK's right [to immunity] receives the seal of approval over security issues," al-Sana said.
