TA prosecutor files indictment against escaped serial rapist Benny Sela
By Nir Hasson, Haaretz Correspondent

The Tel Aviv Prosecutor's Office filed an indictment Sunday against serial rapist Benny Sela for escaping police custody and for crimes committed while he was out of prison.

Sela is charged with escaping legal custody, auto theft, driving a vehicle without a license, and assaulting a police officer under severe circumstances.

The indictment details the escape plan, starting on November 23, 2006 when Sela was brought from the Eshel prison where he was being held, to a hearing at the Labor Court. According to the charge sheet, the cost of police searches for the escaped serial rapists stands at NIS 36 million.

According to the charge sheet, "at 8:45 or close to that time, a police van arrived at the courtyard where prisoners awaiting a hearing are held. The defendant, along with another prisoner, was taken out of the van and brought near the steps leading to the court's prisoner cells. While walking down those steps, the defendant suddenly turned to the policeman accompanying him, Haim Tirim, and said that he had forgotten a portfolio of documents in the van. Tirim ordered the defendant to stay in his place and turned towards the van in order to get the portfolio. While doing so, the defendant took advantage of the policeman's lack of attention, and ran towards the courtyard, jumped over the surrounding wall, and escaped from the area. While escaping, the defendant took off his Prison Services uniform in a nearby garden, in order to prevent identification."

The charge sheet also says that two weeks after the escape, Sela broke into the Gross family's home in Pardes Hanna and stole money, credit cards, and the house keys.

On the following morning, the serial rapist returned to the family home and stole the family car.
