German MPs meet Jordan's King to discuss reviving Mideast peace process
By DPA

AMMAN - A German parliamentary delegation conferred with Jordan's King Abdullah II on Sunday on means of reviving the stalled Israeli-Arab peace process, according to an official statement.

"The discussions covered latest developments in the Middle East region, particularly means of reviving the peace process, as well as the situation in Iraq," the statement from the royal court said.

"The king praised the role being played by Germany for pushing ahead the peace process and boosting security and stability in the region," it added.

King Abdullah described Chancellor Angela Merkel's visit to Jordan at the end of March as "important for boosting Germany's role in the region and promoting bilateral ties" between Germany and Jordan.

He underscored the importance of "intensifying international efforts in the coming stage to ensure the resumption of peace negotiations" between Israel and the Palestinians.

He said that the Saudi peace initiative re-adopted by Arab leaders in Riyadh at the end of March, "provided an historic opportunity for addressing all aspects of the Arab-Israeli conflict."

The blueprint, which was first adopted by the Arab League in Beirut in 2002, offered to extend recognition to Israel by all Arab states after it pulls out from all the Arab lands it captured in the 1967 Six-Day War, including East Jerusalem, and finding a "just settlement" for the issue of Palestinian refugees.

The German parliamentary delegation also held talks with Jordanian Foreign Minister Abdul Ilah Khatib and members of the Foreign Relations Committee at the lower house of parliament on efforts under way to push forward Arab-Israeli peace talks.

The seven-member team, which represents main German political parties, is led by Joachim Horster, chairman of the German Arab Committee at the German parliament.

The German MPs are on a tour of Jordan, Syria and the Palestinian territories for a "firsthand acquaintance on the Arab Peace Initiative," diplomatic sources said.
