Hezbollah denies wartime contact with Azmi Bishara

Hezbollah Deputy Secretary General Sheikh Naim Kassem denied Saturday his organization paid off or received intelligence reports from former MK Azmi Bishara during the Second Lebanon War.

In an interview with Al Jazeera to be aired Saturday evening, Kassem said that Israeli allegations that Bishara had secret and continuous contact with Hezbollah intelligence operatives during the war are false.

Kassem maintained that Bishara is a part of Israeli politics, and said Israel is trying to place the blame on Bishara for its own failures during the war.

This is the first time that such a senior official within the organization is reacting to the Bishara affair.

Kassem also claimed in the interview that the Hezbollah did not support Bishara financially. "He's in a different place," said Kassem.

The deputy secretary said that Hezbollah "reorganized its forces and is ready for another Israeli offensive." He also said he does not believe that a war will break out between Hezbollah and Israel or Syria and Israel this summer, but warned that Israeli intervention in the Iranian nuclear program will increase the chances for another conflict in the region.
