Report: Israel nixes major arms deal with former Soviet state
By Haaretz Service

Israel has dropped a substantial deal to sell weapons to a former Soviet state for fear of harming ties with Russia, Israel Radio reported Thursday.

The radio said that the sale would have yielded Israel a "large amount" of money.

According to the report, senior members of the unnamed country's defense establishment traveled to Israel to meet security chiefs in an effort to advance the sale.

Former minister Roni Milo, who has business ties in the country, confirmed that the meetings had taken place, the radio said.

The report quoted a senior Israeli source as saying that Israel had in the past tried to stymie major Russian weapons sales to Syria and it was therefore unreasonable to sell weapons to a country experiencing tension with Moscow.
