NII: 66 terror fatalities in past year, 1,635 since establishment of state

Sixty-six civilians were killed in hostile actions since last Independence Day, mostly during the Second Lebanon War, bringing the number of civilians killed in terror attacks since the state's establishment to 1,635, according to National Insurance Institute (NII) Director Dr. Yigal Ben-Shalom.

He released the statistics for fallen soldiers and terror victims ahead of Memorial Day next week.

The NII, which is responsible for compensation payments to terror victims, says 1,116 attacks have occurred since the beginning of the second intifada in October 2000. There were 874 civilian deaths and 14,000 people injured. About 18 percent of those killed were children, and a similar number were immigrants who had arrived since 1990.

During the Second Lebanon War, 57 civilians were killed and 5,091 were injured, 34 seriously and 86 moderately. Almost 40 percent of the injuries were psychological rather than physical.

In 2006 the NII paid NIS 360 million to terror victims and their families.

The names of the terror victims will be televised on the eve of Memorial Day on Channel 33, and the official Memorial Day ceremony next Monday will take place in the afternoon at Mount Herzl in Jerusalem.

The names of almost 4,000 people killed in terror attacks since the First Aliyah in the late 19th century appear on a memorial site of the NII.
