A Border Police operations officer was indicted Tuesday for espionage, narcotics smuggling, fraud and breach of trust.

The officer, 33-year-old Bahdi Bisan of Kfar Gat, allegedly gave an Israeli Bedouin man classified information regarding defense forces operations against drug smuggling.

Bisan headed the operations of the Border Police's Ramon company near the Egyptian border, and was in charge of coordinating operations with other military units operating in the area.

According to the indictment submitted Tuesday to the Beer Sheva District Court, Bisan used a police jeep to smuggle drugs from the Egypt and drive smugglers to their destinations.

According to the charges, Bisan allegedly transferred classified information concerning operations to counter drug smuggling to Wasalem Abu Rawis, a 33-year-old Bedouin man from the village of Bir Hadj in the Negev.

Bisan allegedly gave the Rawis information about patrols, lookouts, scouting operations, and the locations of various technological devices.

Rawis was also indicted Tuesday for narcotics smuggling and espionage.

According to prosecution, the officer's actions jeopardized national security because they could have "enabled potential terrorists to cross the border."

Although the prosecution had requested that the two men be remanded until the conclusion of the judicial proceedings against them, the court extended there remand by only 12 days.
