Iran says the U.K. gov't should make 'goodwill gestures'

Iran has called on the U.K. to enact goodwill gestures in response to Iran's release of 15 British servicemen on Thursday.

In an interview with the British newspaper "Financial Times" on Saturday, Iranian Ambassador to the U.K. Rasul Muvhadian stated that "we did our part and showed our good will. It is now the British government's turn to continue on this positive path."

Muvhadian did not explicitly mention 5 Iranians captured by U.S. forces in Arbil, Iraq, but stated that "If Britain wants to help and is willing to use their influence, we welcome this gladly. We also welcome any measures they take to ease tensions in the region."

Muvhadian also stated that Tehran will welcome any change in the international community's perception of their nuclear development program.

On Wednesday, Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad stated that the release of the British servicemen was a "gift" to the British people, stating "We have all the right to try these people in a court of law, but I want to return them as a gift to the British people and to say that they are free." The next day, all 15 servicemen were returned to Britain.

The British government has vehemently denied that they sent an apology letter to Iran over the incident as has been stated by Iranian officials.
