IDF troops shoots dead Jihad gunman within Gaza Strip border

An IDF unit on Wednesday shot and killed an Islamic Jihad militant on the border with the Gaza Strip. Another militant was injured in the incident.

Soldiers from the Givati Brigade engaged three militants they saw approaching the border fence in the northern part of the Gaza Strip. The three fled, but the soldiers gave chase several hundred meters into the Gaza Strip.

In the exchanges of fire, one of the Palestinians, Ramiz Al-Zaneen, was killed, another was injured and the third was arrested.

During the incident, the militants detonated two bombs they had planted on the Palestinian side of the fence. There were no injuries among the IDF soldiers.

In recent weeks, the political leadership has permitted the IDF to enter the Gaza Strip in order to prevent the placing of bombs by militants, or to uncover tunnels near the fence.

Also Wednesday, an IDF soldier was moderately wounded predawn while patrolling in the West Bank city of Jenin.

The soldier was wounded in the shoulder in an ambush by Palestinian gunmen in the Jenin refugee camp. He was evacuated to Haemek Hospital in Afula.

On Tuesday, a wanted Fatah militant was seriously injured by IDF troops in the West Bank city of Nablus.

The incident occurred after soldiers from a patrol unit of the Golani Brigade noticed a group of five armed men approaching them.

In an exchange of fire, the wanted militant Ahmed Sanakra was badly wounded and taken to a nearby hospital in the city. He left behind his M-16 rifle.

The IDF reported no injuries in the incident.

Sanakra's brother said Ahmed was not taken to hospital for fear of being arrested by the IDF, and was treated outside of the hospital.

Sanakra, 22, has allegedly been involved with the planning of numerous bombing and shooting incidents against the IDF in the Nablus area, and with attempts to send suicide bombers to infiltrate the Green Line. He is considered one of the primary leaders of Fatah's military wing.
