Noam Shalit, the father of kidnapped Israel Defense Forces soldier Gilad Shalit, met Tuesday with the French ambassador to Israel, Jean-Michel Casa, and demanded the French government recognize the new Palestinian government only after his son is released.

Shalit did not hide his disappointment with France's conduct regarding the release of his son until this day.

"The French government, a state of human rights, whose flag bears the three founding distinguished principles: Liberte, Egalite, Franternite (liberty, equality, and brotherhood) - is leading today a process of support and recognition of the Palestinian government, which includes the elements responsible for kidnapping Gilad and holding him captive for nine months now, without showing any signs of flexibility regarding the prisoners exchange deal," said Shalit.

"Therefore, as a French-Israeli citizen, father of the captive Gilad Shalit, I am asking the French government, together with the entire European Union, to demand the end to Gilad's captivity before any French recognition or financial or other aid is given to the new Palestinian government," Shalit said at the end of the meeting.

Shalit spoke in French at a press conference with French journalists following the meeting.

"We are disappointed that the French government is not demanding in a loud and clear voice from the Palestinian government the immediate release of Gilad, who is a French citizen, in addition to his being an Israeli soldier," he said.

Shalit added that, "Hamas is preventing access of any international body to Gilad, and we the family, have no idea what health and general state he is in, and in what conditions he is being held."

The previous French ambassador, Gerard Araud, visited the Shalit home shortly after the kidnapping, and vowed that the French government would work for the quick release of Gilad Shalit.
