Peretz to focus on Arab sector for Labor primaries
By Mazal Mualem , Haaretz Correspondent

Labor Party chair Defense Minister Amir Peretz will go on the offensive against his rivals for the party's leadership, it was decided in a meeting with his strategy team over the weekend. Peretz will also campaign more visibly in the Arab sector, in which Sports and Science Minister Raleb Majadele signed up thousands of new party members.

On Saturday, Peretz toured Arab villages in the north together with Majadele and MK Nadia Hilou. He hopes to increase his support in the Arab sector by the time Labor election primaries take place on May 28 and that the votes from this sector will turn the tide of support in the party in his favor.

Meanwhile, former prime minister Ehud Barak has also been meeting with party members, mostly in closed meetings, as part of his continued low-profile policy.

Barak is scheduled to hold a major rally next Sunday ahead of Passover together with the ministers in his camp, Isaac Herzog, Binyamin Ben-Eliezer and Shalom Simhon in the dining hall at Kibbutz Yakum in the Sharon region.

Barak and MK Ami Ayalon, who are leading the race for party chair, are both working intensively to curry support in the party's kibbutz sector.
