The Turkel Committee announced Friday that in two weeks it will release its decision regarding the appointment of Israel Prison Service Commissioner Yaakov Ganot to the position of police commissioner, and the appointment of Prison Service Deputy Commissioner Benny Kaniak as commissioner of the Prison Service.

The candidates and outgoing Police Commissioner Moshe Karadi appeared before the committee Friday. Yesterday, Internal Security Minister Avi Dichter also appeared before the committee.

The chairman of the committee, retired magistrate Yaakov Turkel intends to hear information presented over two sessions, and will then draft the final decision.

Two weeks ago, Ganot submitted his application and a detailed biography. Ganot also petitioned to add letters of appreciation and recommendation from colleagues, friends and superiors that he collected over the years, and the committee agreed to accept them.

The court placed the examination of conflict of interest in the hands of the Turkel Committee, adding that the committee's analysis was calculated to be more comprehensive than that of the legal system.

One month ago, the High Court announced that protests against Ganot's appointment as police commissioner were premature, however decided not to strike them from the record at that time.
