Five people were killed over the weekend in road accidents, among them a mother and her daughter. A total of 12 people were injured.

Rahel Raisa Shneor, 64, and her daughter, Chen Yochebed, 42, were killed Friday morning at the Yad Binyamin junction in the Lachish area. The two women and the daughter's husband, who was seriously injured, were on their way to visit the grave of Shneor's husband. The daughter and her husband were on a visit from the United States.

The investigation shows that Shneor's car pulled up behind a Border Police vehicle at the junction, which has a traffic light. "Behind the family's Mazda, a semi-trailer approached at high speed and hit the Mazda, shunting it to the left," said Chief Inspector Eli Brami, head of the Lachish district's traffic accident department. Shneor, who was sitting in the backseat, was killed instantly. Her daughter died in the hospital shortly afterward.

The two passengers in the Border Police vehicle were slightly injured.

The truck driver, who was not injured, was taken into custody for questioning. He told police he saw the light change to green and was sure the Mazda had started to move. He has been released to five-day house arrest.

A motorcyclist, 33, was killed yesterday on Road 89 near Safed when a car crashed into his motorbike at the exit from the city. Investigators say the driver of the car, who was slightly injured, may have hit the motorcycle because its driver did not obey a yield sign.

A resident of the village of Nahf near Carmiel was killed yesterday afternoon and five people were injured on Road 85 near Majd al-Krum west of Carmiel. Ali Mustafa Daibs, 65, was driving out of Majd al-Krum with his wife and apparently did not obey a stop sign. A Mercedes carrying four people hit the car from the side, and Daibs died on the way to the hospital.

In another accident yesterday afternoon, six people were injured moderately to seriously in a collision between a sedan and a van east of Tiberias.

A five-year-old girl from Safed was slightly injured Friday when she was run over by a car driven by a 15-year-old, who had taken the car keys without his parents' knowledge.
