Teachers' union to go on strike Thursday in Haifa high schools
By Or Kashti, Haaretz Correspondent

The Secondary Schools Teachers' Association will go on strike Thursday in all Haifa region high schools, canceling classes for all students in gardes seven to 12.

Additionally, starting Wednesday teachers throughout the country will begin working only within the curriculum of their scheduled in-class lessons.

The association said it decided to resume their disruptions of the education system following foot-dragging in its negotiations with the treasury over new work agreements.

As part of their strike, there will be no special assistance for students with learning disabilities, and the teachers will not conduct any activities outside the classroom, the teachers will not accompany students on rides to school and will not hold special reinforcement classes to prepare students for matriculation exams.

The association noted however that preparations for Holocaust Memorial Day and Fallen Soldiers' Memorial Day will not be jeopardized.

Thursday's strike and the sanctions that began on Wednesday are part of the association's renewed struggle. "The negotiations continue to be sterile and no progress has been reached," the association said. "The treasury and Education Ministry representatives participating in negotiations are unable to answer any on the teachers' demands."

According to the Secondary Schools Teachers' Association chairman, Ran Erez, "Neither the finance minister nor the education minister have the authority to make progress, let alone their representatives to the negotiations."

"It all comes down to the lack of government policy for investing in the education system and to the fact that the prime minister does not give a green light to invest in Israel's children," Erez added. "The public must know that cheap education will cost us all a fortune in the future."
