Last update - 18:17 28/02/2007 Polish PM hopes to adopt restitution law for seized Jewish property By The Associated Press Poland's prime minister told Jewish leaders on Wednesday that his government would work toward adopting a restitution law this year for private property seized during World War II. Jaroslaw Kaczynski assured leaders of the Jewish Claims Conference of good will on his government's part on resolving the restitution issue, his office said in a statement. The group, led by its president Israel Singer, represents Jewish families and their heirs seeking compensation or the return of property seized by the Nazis during the war and later taken over by the communists who ruled Poland until 1989. Advertisement Claims Conference representatives, including executive vice president Gideon Taylor, met with Kaczynski in hopes of reaching a solution to private property along the lines of a 1997 law that orders the restitution of Jewish communal property such as prayer houses, synagogues or cemeteries. Authorities in Warsaw, where many claims have been made, argue that restitution is complicated because some 40 percent of the city's infrastructure was destroyed in World War II and replaced by new buildings. In 2001, President Aleksander Kwasniewski vetoed a restitution bill for private property, arguing that it violated the constitution and would be too costly for Poland's strained economy. Poles who had their property seized by the communists after the end of the war are also interested in such a law.
