Tens of thousands celebrate wedding of grandson of Ger Hasidic rabbi

Tens of thousands of Jews dressed in their traditional black suits celebrated in Jerusalem on Tuesday at the wedding of the grandson of the leader of a prominent Hassidic dynasty.

Police estimated the crowd at 50,000 and closed off several streets in the Romema neighborhood, near the main entrance to Jerusalem, to allow for dancing in the streets.

The groom was Aron Noah Alter, the oldest grandson of Rabbi Yaakov Aryeh Alter, leader of the Ger dynasty of Hassidic Jews, one of the largest sects in the ultra-Orthodox Jewish sector in Israel.

Only the bride, groom and close relatives took part in the ceremony, while the thousands of well-wishers celebrated outside - men and women in separate locations according to strict Jewish practice.

Media reports said both the groom and bride, whose name was not released, are under 20. The newlywed groom would likely one day assume the hereditary leadership of the sect.
