16 activists hurt during clashes at anti-fence protest in Bil'in

Some 16 people were lightly hurt on Friday at the anti-separation fence protest in the West Bank village of Bil'in, marking two years since the start of the weekly demonstrations.

About 1,000 people, including many Israelis and foreign nationals, clashed with security forces during the gathering.

Four Palestinians were taken to hospital to receive medical treatment for rubber-tipped bullet and tear gas wounds, and Israeli artist David Riv sustained a light chest wound after he was hit in the stomach by a tear gas canister.

Protesters gather at Bil'in every Friday to protest Israel's expropriaton of lands from local farmers to erect a barrier it says is aimed at preventing suicide bomber infiltration.

Critics of the plan, however, claim the barrier built on land outside Israel's 1948 borders is a land grab.
