A hearing for President Moshe Katsav over allegations that he raped and sexually harassed former subordinates, a final step prior to a decision to indict the president, has been scheduled for May 2.

The date for the hearing was announced on Wednesday by Attorney General Menachem Mazuz, speaking to the Knesset House Committee.

Mazuz was quoted by Army Radio as calling the hearing represents "a substantive and not merely procedural proceeding," which may change Mazuz' opinion over the case.

Last month Mazuz announced that he was considering indicting Latsav for rape, sexual harassment, breach of trust, fraud and tampering with a witness.

Mazuz' decision on whether to bring Katsav to trial will be made following the hearing.

Katsav has rejected calls that he resign his post. On January 25, the Knesset narrowly approved his request for a three-month leave of absence. His post has been filled on an acting basis by senior Kadima MK Dalia Itzik.
