Netanya man sentenced to 25 years for brutally raping woman
By Nir Hasson, Haaretz Correspondent

A 38-year-old Netanya man was sentenced to 25 years in prison Wednesday for raping a 44-year-old woman on several occasions, causing her serious physical and emotional harm.

Tel Aviv District Court convicted Adam Benyagov on a number of counts of rape causing injury and abuse, and inflicting emotional harm and aggravated assault.

The woman died shortly after delivering her testimony.

"Review of the facts presented before us reveals a rare and difficult story of brutality," wrote judges Bracha Ofir Tom, Miriam Sokolov and Yeshayahu Schneller in the conviction.

The conviction stated that the violations occurred three times, each time for a period of two days or more. On each occasion, Benyagov repeatedly raped the victim violently and abused her.

At the end of each incident, the victim was forced to undergo medical and psychological treatment.

The first incident occurred in January 2005, when the woman met Benyagov and invited him to her apartment to drink vodka.

He asked to have sex with her, and when she refused he struck her and violently raped her.

Benyagov stayed in the apartment for two days, during which time he raped her and forced her to perform oral sex.

The woman suffered serious injuries and massive bleeding and was admitted to Laniado Hospital, Sanz Medical Center in Netanya.

The following day, Benyagov arrived at the hospital and demanded that she return home. He then raped her again despite her complaints of severe pain.

After two days, the woman was able to prevent Benyagov from returning to the apartment with the help of neighbors, who removed him from the premises.

In the following days, the victim was transferred to a psychiatric hospital for treatment for post-traumatic stress.

In April 2005, after being released from the hospital, Benyagov met the victim again, and again raped her violently.

The next day, the victim fled from the apartment and was admitted to the hospital once more. She was discovered to have suffered serious injury to her internal organs and underwent immediate surgery.

"Words cannot express the criminal acts of the accused, nor the terror experienced by the plaintiff. These are revolting, contemptible acts which arouse disgust. The court rarely encounters acts of sexual abuse so severe and so sadistic," the judges wrote.
