Labor demands cabinet approve Majadele appointment Sunday
By Mazal Mualem, Haaretz Correspondent

The Labor Party decided Thursday to demand that MK Raleb Majadele be appointed a minister without portfolio in the upcoming cabinet meeting, scheduled for Sunday.

The party is demanding that a final decision be made on which portfolio to give Majadele within the next two weeks. The Labor MK is set to become Israel's first Arab cabinet minister.

The party also gave its chairman, Amir Peretz, the authority to conduct negotiations with Prime Minister Ehud Olmert regarding the appointment.

According to Labor's decision, should the cabinet fail to appoint Majadele, the party would view it as a breach of the coalition agreement, and Labor's governing bodies would meet to discuss quitting the government.

It is yet unclear whether the cabinet will discuss Majadele's appointment in the upcoming meeting.
