10-year-old girl seriously hurt by Border Police fire died of wounds
By Yair Ettinger, Haaretz Correspondent

A 10-year-girl who was seriously wounded by Border Police troops Tuesday succumbed to her wounds Thursday.

An autopsy performed Friday revealed that the girl was not wounded by live fire, although doctors said they could not determine what did cause the wound, Israel Radio reported.

Abir Aramin suffered a serious head wound Tuesday during her school's recess in the West Bank village of Anata, northeast of Jerusalem. At the time, there were clashes nearby between Border Police forces and protestors, and witnesses and her family say she was injured by Border Police fire directed near her school.

A spokeswoman for Hadassah University Hospital in Ein Karem, where the girl is currently hospitalized, said the cause of her injuries cannot be absolutely determined based on medical evidence. Aramin is unconscious, and is on a respirator.

A hospital source said, however, that she seemed to have suffered wounds from a ricochet, which would support the "conjecture" that a stun grenade exploded near her head.

The IDF Spokesman's Office confirmed that the Border Police troops used crowd-dispersal means, but said the army has no knowledge of any injuries.

"During a Border Police operation in Anata, a riot developed that including the throwing of stones at the force," said a IDF statement. "The troops were forced to respond with methods for dispersing protestors. As of yet, no complaint has been received ... regarding injuries."

"The girl may have been hurt by a stone thrown by the protesters," said a security source. "We have no knowledge of injuries."

At roughly 9 A.M. on Tuesday, clashes broke out between protestors and Border Police troops near the seam-line between Anata and the adjacent village of Dahiat A-Salaam. The clashes have been a routine occurrence since construction began on the separation fence in the area, and have continued despite the completion of the construction.

According to the residents, the clashes take place due to the daily presence of Border Police troops in the area, which is adjacent to three schools housing hundreds of students.

Sixth-graders at the local elementary school for girls went to recess at the same time as the clashes. Abir Aramin and her sister Arin, who are classmates, went to buy some candy at a nearby store, when Abir suddenly began bleeding from the head and collapsed.

The girls' father, Basaam Aramin, said his daughter Arin told him "Abir flew in the air and fell on her face from the force of the strike."

A Palestinian ambulance rushed her to Makassed Hospital in East Jerusalem, from which she was transferred within a few hours to Hadassah. She is currently in the children's intensive care ward, and her condition is listed as very serious.

Witnesses said they collected rubber-coated bullets in the area that were fired by the Border Police troops, although other witnesses said a stun grenade fired by the forces exploded near the girl.

Her father, an activist in the joint Israel-Palestinian organization "Fighters for Peace," said, "Border Policemen see our children as targets, terrorists. They think if they shoot a 10-year-old girl they are serving the country's security."

"I don't know how a policeman is threatened by a 10-year-old girl who went to buy candy," said Aramin. "Maybe they will say it was a psycho who shot, or they will say that sometimes [Palestinians] lie and say a Palestinian family was killed on the sand at the beach, or that in Beit Hanun 20 Palestinians were killed by Qassams. But this story won't work with me, this policeman and his commanders must be punished."
