Court rejects ex-MK's appeal of conviction for double-voting
By Nir Hasson, Haaretz Correspondent

The Jerusalem District Court on Wednesday rejected the appeal of former Likud MK Yehiel Hazan over his conviction on charges of aggravated forgery, fraud and breach of public trust in the double-voting affair.

The three judges - Moshe Ravid, Orit Efal-Gabai and Aharon Farkash - left the original sentence unchanged.

Hazan was tried and convicted by the Jerusalem Magistrate's Court for allegedly voting twice - for himself and for absent Likud MK Inbal Gavrieli - during the second and third readings of a bill on the emergency economic plan in May 2003. He was sentenced to four months of community service and a six-month suspended prison term.

Hazan was found guilty of first voting at his own electronic machine and then leaning forward and voting again at Gavrieli's machine. On both occasions, the vote cast was against the bill.

In November 2005, Hazan admitted he had tampered with evidence connected to his trial for allegedly voting for Gavrieli.

Hazan was caught "red-handed" by Knesset security cameras as he was leaving the Knesset stockroom holding a bag containing the evidence.
