The number of Israelis traveling to the Sinai has fallen by 29 percent in the past year, a survey conducted by the Israel Airports Authority has shown.

While the figures for Israelis visiting Jordan fell slightly, the number of Jordanians visiting Israel rose by 5.1 percent.

The number of Israelis traveling to Egypt via the Taba crossing fell by 29 percent in 2006, according to statistics from the Israel Airports Authority, which is responsible for the countries border crossing.

Israeli tourism to Sinai has been hit hard by terror operations and warnings of possible attacks in recent years. Dozens were killed in October, 2004, in the bombing of the luxury hotel in Taba, Sinai, just south of Eilat.

Most recently, in April, 2006, 23 people were killed, including several foreigners, in a bombing farther south, in Dahab.

In 2006, 391,500 Israelis crossed Israel's borders mostly to the Sinai Peninsula. This figure does not include Israelis who flew to Egypt.

Despite this. the number of Israelis crossing into Jordan fell only slightly, by 1.9 percent, to 489,000.

Approximately two thirds of the travelers to Jordan crossed at the Sheikh Hussein Bridge, while the remainder crossed at the Allenby Bridge and the Rabin crossing.

The number of Jordanians crossing the border rose by 5.1 percent to 86,000 in 2006.
