By Revital Levy-Stein, Haaretz Correspondent and Haaretz Service

A female police officer in Eilat sustained serious head wounds Friday night after being attacked by an intoxicated man who threw an iron rod at her. The intoxicated man was later arrested.

The suspect, a 28-year-old resident of the southern city, has a violent background known to police.

The incident occurred near a nightclub on the northern side of the city's main boardwalk. The officer and her comrade were patrolling when they were called to the area after receiving complaints of disturbances.

Upon arriving, the officers found a skirmish between several intoxicated people. When attempting to disperse the brawl, one of them threw an 40 cm. iron rod at the officer, hitting her in the head.

The officer lost consciousness, and was evacuated to Yoseftal Medical Center in the city for medical care. The doctors, unable to stabilize her condition, evacuated the officer to Soroka Medical Center in Be'er Sheva.
