Noam Shalit: I am ready to go to Gaza and sit with the Hamas. (Ancho Gosh / Jini)

Shalit's father says he is willing to trade himself for his son
By Haaretz Staff and the Associated Press

Noam Shalit said Wednesday that he was willing to turn himself over to a group of Hamas-linked Palestinian militants if they would release his son Gilad from captivity.

Cpl. Gilad Shalit was captured June 25 by Hamas-linked militants in a Gaza cross-border raid. Prisoner swap negotiations to free him, brokered by Egyptian mediators, have failed.

Shalit said if the kidnappers needed assurances, he was willing to offer himself up as collateral until a final deal could be secured.

"I am ready to vouch for the rest of the deal," he told The Associated Press. "If they don't trust the Egyptians or the Israelis, I said that I am ready to go to Gaza and sit with the Hamas and wait for the deal."

Noam Shalit also told Army Radio on Wednesday that he is willing to guarantee the demands of his son's captors are met.

One of the Palestinian militant groups behind Shalit's capture in June last year said Tuesday that he is in "good health."
