Palestinian militants: Abducted soldier Shalit is in 'good health'

One of the Palestinian militant groups behind the capture of an Israel Defense Forces soldier in June 2006 said Tuesday that he is in "good health."

The comments mark the first time that the group has provided details about the health of Corporal Gilad Shalit.

Abu Mujahid, spokesman for the Palestinian Popular Resistance Committees, said Shalit would not be released until Israel gives in to demands to release 1,000 Palestinian prisoners.

"Gilad Shalit is in good health and is being treated according to Islamic standards of dealing with prisoners of war," Abu Mujahid said.

"We are prepared to keep him for years, if our demands are not met," he added.

The PRC, along with the Hamas military wing and a group calling itself the Army of Islam, carried out the June 25 cross-border attack on an IDF base near Gaza in which Shalit was captured and two of his comrades were killed.
