Poll places Livni as clear leader in run-up to Kadima primary
By Haaretz Service

Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni enjoys unrivaled support for head of Kadima and premiership within her party, while Prime Minister Ehud Olmert is trailing far behind, according to a new poll published by Israel Radio Thursday.

According to the poll, 49 percent of Kadima voters back Livni's nomination for head of the party should national elections be held earlier than scheduled, whereas only 8.7 percent of voters support the prime minister.

The poll, conducted by Panorama Markets, found that 42 percent of participants believe that Olmert's government would last for just another year, 10 percent hold it would last two more years, while 36 percent believe it would last through the end of its term, in November 2010.

Livni emerges from the poll as the most popular candidate for leading the party if Olmert quits and needs to be replaced: She enjoys the support of 37.7 percent of Kadima voters, compared to 16 percent who back Vice Premier Shimon Peres, approximately 11.5 percent supporting Public Security Minister Avi Dichter, 7 percent backing Transportation Minister Shaul Mofaz and approximately 6 percent backing Construction and Housing Minister Meir Sheetrit.

Approximately 16 percent of poll-takers said they do not support any of the candidates.

Livni remains unmatched also in a one-on-one battle with the prime minister, enjoying 61 percent of voters against 24.5 percent of Olmert; when placed against Mofaz the foreign minister comes ahead with 59 percent compared with 23 percent for the transportation minister.

Placed against one another, Mofaz and Olmert enjoy 31.9 percent each in the premiership race.
