Olmert's approval rating dips to a low 23 %
By Gideon Alon

According to a poll conducted by the Dahaf Institute for the Knesset Channel, 77 percent of Israelis believe that Prime Minister Ehud Olmert is not doing a good job, while only 23 percent gave him a high grade for his performance as prime minister.

About 60 percent of respondents rated Olmert's personal integrity as "not good" and only 30 percent as "good."

Regarding Olmert's decision-making, about 75 percent of respondents said it was "not good" and only 24 percent rated it as "good."

Olmert did not fare much better on the question of his ability to perform under pressure: 62 percent of respondents said he was not good at dealing with pressure, as opposed to 37 percent who said he was.

Eighty percent of respondents told pollsters they believed that not all of the relevant considerations were examined before the decision to wage war in Lebanon last summer was made; 56 percent said the decision to go to war was justified, while 42 percent said it was not.

Sub-par PM

Respondents were asked to specify the reasons for Olmert's sub-par performance as prime minister.

Half cited the events of the past year, 31 percent pointed to Olmert's personality as the reason and 15 percent attributed the failures to the composition of the government.

Close to half of the respondents, 45 percent, said their approval of Olmert would increase were the prime minister to dismiss Amir Peretz as defense minister.

Only 20 percent said their approval of Olmert would rise if he dismissed Chief of Staff Dan Halutz, as opposed to 73 percent who said such a move would not change their opinion of Olmert.
