The unauthorized West Bank settlement outpost Amona, which has come to symbolize the opposition to the evacuation of outposts, continues to expand, according to aerial photographs carried out by Peace Now last month.

The photographs show that at least 12 new mobile homes were added to the Amona's original four homes in recent months, less than one year after security forces razed nine homes in the outpost.

Haaretz reported last week that according to defense establishment data, 200 new structures were set up in the territories without permission from the state over the past six months. Some of these were set up in unauthorized outposts and others in established settlements.

One of the outposts listed in the report was Amona, which is near the settlement of Ofra, north of Ramallah.

Peace Now's evidence shows that 12 new caravans were set up in addition to the four that have been at the site since August.

Dror Etkes, who heads the monitoring of new construction in the territories for Peace Now, compared the new aerial photographs with previous ones.

The Israel Defense Forces and police razed nine illegally built homes in Amona in February following a court decision in favor of a Peace Now petition.

The evacuation involved violent clashes between police and thousands of settlers and right-wing activists. Many of the protesters were severely beaten during the clashes.

Peace Now claims that the entire outpost is illegal, arguing it was set up on private Palestinian land.

The group chose to concentrate on the nine structures, because they constituted a blatant violation of the law and could be used to test government policy.

Information on Amona's expansion, along with internal defense establishment reports, proves that construction in the outposts continues unabated despite repeated declarations to the contrary made by the prime minister and defense minister.

A government report, compiled by attorney Talia Sasson, into West Bank construction listed 61 illegal outposts established in the 1990s, housing more than 600 people.
