Saddam Hussein's alleged crimes
By The Associated Press

Saddam Hussein was executed for ordering the killings of 148 Shiite Muslims in 1982. Here are some other crimes Saddam had been accused of:

- Sept. 22, 1980: Iraqi forces invade Iran, launching an eight-year war that costs hundreds of thousands of lives on both sides. Saddam has been accused of using chemical weapons, including mustard gas and nerve agents, against Iran.

- Aug. 2, 1990: Iraq invades Kuwait after accusing it of stealing Iraq's oil through wells pumped under the two countries' border. Beaten back by invading U.S. forces, retreating Iraqi troops set fire to hundreds of Kuwaiti oil wells and release millions of gallons of oil into the Gulf.

- 1991: Saddam is accused of brutally suppressing uprisings by Kurds and
Shiite Muslims, soon after U.S.-led forces drove Iraqi forces from Kuwait.

- Saddam's government has been accused of carrying out a campaign of forced deportations of Kurdish and Turkomen families to southern Iraq, displacing hundreds of thousands throughout the country.
