Ultra-Orthodox community, El Al hammer out draft agreement

A draft agreement has been hammered out between representatives of El Al and the ultra-Orthodox community, stipulating that the airline would appoint a rabbi in the event of a future issue over a flight on the Sabbath. The contract between El Al and an ultra-Orthodox rabbinical forum would also oblige the carrier to maintain its policy of not flying on Shabbat.

If a need to fly on Shabbat arises, as occurred three weeks ago, setting off an unofficial Haredi boycott of the airline, the rabbi would determine whether the flight was a matter of life or death and thus permissible. Failure to follow the rabbi's ruling would constitute a violation of the agreement.

An El Al spokesman on Tuesday refused to say what sanctions would be imposed against the company in that event. Representatives of both sides emphasized Tuesday that the crisis has not yet been resolved.

The ultra-Orthodox community accounts for between 20 and 30 percent of El Al's passengers, and Israeli media have estimated potential loss of revenue of $300 million from a full boycott.
