Jerusalem girds for possible snow storm on Wednesday
By Haaretz Service

Jerusalem municipal crews have begun preparations for the possibility of snowfalls on Wednesday and Thursday, readying hundreds of kilometers of emergency escape routes, the city announced on Monday.

"Mayor Uri Lupolianski has ordered municipal teams to keep over 500 kilometers of emergency routes clear to allow emergency and rescue vehicles to move freely when needed," it said in a statement.

The workers are preparing to strew salt on main roads to prevent freezing. Extra workers will staff the municipal hotline 106, and welfare workers will aid the elderly and those with special needs.

The municipality advised residents that in order to prepare for snow:

  • Heating systems should be checked, especially those who require ventilation.

  • Roofs and other openings, such as doors and windows are properly sealed, and that the drains are open.

  • Tree branches should be cut down in private gardens that are near power cables.

  • The electrical system should be checked for safety, and emergency lighting should be kept handy.

  • Antennas, water tanks, and other roof-top objects should be securely fastened.

  • Outdoor objects that aren't fastened and might fall from a high place - flower pots, patio furniture and signs ? should be fastened down or removed.

If heavy snow falls, residents should avoid standing under pavilions, pergolas, shacks or temporary structures that may be in danger of collapse.

The public was further advised to drive safely.
