Green group says Tel Aviv city construction work harmed beach
By Tzafir Rinat, Haaretz Correspondent

The Society for Protection of Nature (SPNI) environmental group has squared off against the Tel Aviv Municipality, arguing that a stone wall covered with earthen clay, built at the southern end of the Tel Aviv beachfront, has caused damage to the beach, and reduced the size of the beach available for public use.

The wall was built at the beach located south of the Charles Clore Park. Clay was poured into the area between the promenade and the wall, which, according to the SPNI, made the already small beach even smaller.

SPNI Tel Aviv Director Anat Barkai-Nebo said the municipality had no license to build the wall, and that the beach should be returned to its original state.

The Environment Ministry has responded that work at the beach was done according to law, and that in their opinion the beach did not incur environmental harm.

The municipality offices, reacting to SPNI's claim, said that the wall was part of widespread city plans to restore the beachfront promenade. The municipality spokesperson denied that part of the beach was covered in earth, and said the beach remained the same size.
