Report: Hamas chief Meshal calls for 10-year cease-fire
By Haaretz Services

Khaled Meshal, the Damascus-based political chief of Hamas, has been quoted as calling for a 10-year cease-fire between Hamas and Israel, Army Radio reported Monday.

In an interview with the Italian newspaper "La Republica," Meshal was quoted as saying that "all the Palestinian factions agree to a return of Israel's borders to pre-1967 designations."

"We accept the need for two countries to exist, but Israel has no legitimacy so long as the occupation continues," Meshal was quoted as saying.

During the 1967 war, Israel gained control of the Gaza Strip, the Sinai Peninsula, the West Bank and the Golan Heights.

Meshal rose to power as effective leader of Hamas following Israel's killing of the group's founder, Sheikh Ahmed Yassin, in March 2004.
