Acre Magistrate's Court remands suspect in murder of Tair Rada
By Jack Khoury, Haaretz Correspondent, and Itim

Police arrested 56-year-old Raphael Cohen on Thursday in connection with the murder of 13-year-old Tair Rada, whose body was discovered Wednesday evening in the bathroom of Nofei Golan High School in the Golan Heights town of Katzrin.

The Katzrin resident has no criminal record and adamantly denies all the allegations against him, claiming he was nowhere near the scene of the crime at the time of the girl's murder.

His lawyer, Attorney Ibrahim Uda, said that Cohen has an alibi and that police have no evidence against him.

During the remand hearing in the Acre Magistrate's Court, police presented classified documents that apparently connect the suspect to the murder.

Judge Rahamim Tzemah said "it is difficult to say at this point that the suspicion is well founded."

Nonetheless, considering that the investigation is in its preliminary stages, the judge said he believes "there is enough evidence that apparently connects the suspect to the crime."

The judge extended the suspect's remand by only three days, denying the police request for a seven-day remand.

Rada's funeral will be held Thursday at 3 P.M.

On Thursday morning, police began taking statements from Nofei Golan High School students and teachers regarding Rada's murder.

The body was discovered at 7 P.M. by local police, who were sweeping the town after the girl was reported missing. Police say the seventh grader went to school as usual Wednesday morning. Her mother reported her missing a few hours after she failed to return home at 2 P.M.

There were stab wounds on the body as well as other signs of violence. The body will be submitted for autopsy.

According to police, the family has lived in Katzrin for a long time and is not known to have problems. The girl is survived by her parents and two older brothers, in addition to her parents.

Welfare officials and counselors met with the girl's classmates last night in an effort to help them to deal with the event. The school will hold activities this morning to continue the process.

A special police team has been established to investigate the murder and question possible suspects.

News of the shocking murder spread quickly throughout the town. The rumor mill attributed the crime to escaped serial rapist Benny Sela, but police have made it clear there is no evidence tying him to the crime.
