Turkish premier arrives in Jordan for talks on peace process, Iraq
By DPA and the Associated Press

Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyib Erdogan arrived in the Jordanian capital of Amman Saturday for a three-day working visit at the invitation of King Abdullah II.

Erdogan warned that dividing Iraq would spur a civil war and described an upcoming meeting in Jordan between U.S. President George W. Bush and Iraq's premier as very important.

After talks with his Jordanian counterpart, Marouf al-Bakhit, Erdogan told reporters, "I give great importance to the meeting between President Bush and Prime Minister al-Maliki."

"We don't accept the division of Iraq," Erdogan said. "I believe any division of Iraq into three entities would be the start of a full-blown civil war."

"And the division Iraq would only increase the civil war which is going on in Iraq," he warned.

Erdogan and Bakhit were expected to discuss means of restoring stability in the region and the prospects of reinvigorating the Arab-Israeli peace process.

They were also expected to discuss the role Turkey can play in the peace process in the light of the good ties it maintains with both Israel and the Palestinians, officials said.

The situation in Iraq is also expected to figure prominently in Erdogan's discussions in Jordan, they added.
