U.K. newspaper: PM, Peretz order assassinations of Hamas leaders

The Sunday Times of London, quoting unnamed Israeli security sources, reported Sunday that Prime Minister Ehud Olmert and Defense Minister Amir Peretz have ordered their security chiefs to assassinate the Hamas political leadership.

The Times said that the reported decision was taken "in a desperate attempt to stop the barrage of rockets fired by Hamas at Israeli villages."

"The controversial change in tactics has been driven by Peretz, who broke down in tears when one of his bodyguards was badly injured in Sderot, his home village," the newspaper reported.

There was no independent confirmation of the Sunday Times report.
