Livni: International community must tackle threat posed by Iran
By Aluf Ben, Haaretz Correspondent, and Haaretz Service

Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni told conference of North American Jewish leaders Sunday that the international community must wake up and tackle the threat posed by Iran's nuclear program.

In her key note speech at the opening of the United Jewish Communities' General Assembly in Los Angeles, Livni said Iran's words and actions are a direct threat to Israel, but no less of a menace to the values that the international community as a whole claims to hold dear.

"If the world is committed to its promise that the Holocaust will never repeat itself more than it is committed to oil prices, then it's time for the international community to come out of its indifference and stop hesitating in the face of the Iranian threat," Livni said.

The foreign minister said that while the recent Lebanon war exposed many shortcomings within Israel, "it also created opportunities that we can build upon."

"The rules of the game in Lebanon have changed," Livni said, "Hezbollah, surprised by the reaction, has suffered a setback, the Lebanese army has deployed to the south, an arms embargo has been decided upon in the prevention of re-armament."

Olmert will address the General Assembly on Tuesday afternoon.

On Sunday evening, Olmert met with United States Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice in Washington.

Olmert is scheduled to meet with U.S. President George Bush on Monday. The Iranian threat tops the agenda for the meeting, I which Olmert is also to address the situation in the Palestinian Territories and the ceasefire in Lebanon.
