2,000 attend Nazareth rally condemning Beit Hanun shelling
By Jack Khoury, Haaretz Correspondent and News Agencies

Some 2,000 people participated on Friday in a rally in Nazareth, protesting the Israel Defense Forces' shelling in Beit Hanun on Wednesday which killed 19 Palestinian civilians.

Rally participants called on the heads of rival Palestinian political parties Fatah and Hamas to form a unity government. The protesters also condemned Israel.

Shuweiki Hatib, Chairman of the Higher Arab Monitoring Committee, said "(Prime Minister) Olmert's and (Defense Minister) Peretz's investigation panels will not clean the Palestinian blood off their hands."

"What happened in Beit Hanun is a war crime, and those responsible for it, the Olmert-Peretz ensemble, must stand trial," he added.

The leader of the Northern Branch of the Islamic Movement, Sheik Ra'ad Salah, said at the rally "History has proven that no conqueror can occupy our land for long. During the course of history, there have been thousands of Liebermans, but they are all now below the earth, and we and our children walk upon them."

Salah addressed the world's Arab leaders saying, "don't try to negotiate with Olmert. Olmert's government is a warring government and any agreement made with it is not real."

"I call upon those in charge of granting the Nobel Peace prize. Just as you have the freedom to grant the prize, you should also know when to take it away. The first who should have his peace prize revoked is (Vice Premier) Shimon Peres, who spearheads violence."

Jordanians demonstrate against IDF 'massacres' in Gaza
Thousands of Palestinians demonstrated after Friday prayers to protest the killing of 19 Palestinians civilians in Beit Hanun, and urged Jordan and other Arab states to sever ties with Israel.

The demonstration, organized by the Islamic-led opposition parties, started at al-Husseini grand mosque in downtown Amman and ended at the Amman Municipality Square.

Demonstrators raised placards and chanted slogans against Israel and the United States, which they said had supported Israeli "massacres" in the Gaza Strip.

They also burnt Israeli and American flags before dispersing.

Some demonstrators raised photos of the deposed Iraqi President Saddam Hussein, who was recently sentenced to death by an Iraqi tribunal.

The Secretary General of the Islamic Action Front (IAF), Zaki Bani Rsheid, denounced "Arab silence" and the "support to Israel by the U.S. administration, which considers the Israeli massacres a kind of self- defense."

In Sudan, about 2,000 people gathered in front of the United Nations mission building and burned American and Israeli flags. "Down, down USA, we won't be governed by the CIA," chanted the crowd, which was prevented by police from approaching the UN building.

Some 500 boy scouts from an organization affiliated to Lebanon's Hezbollah militant group also gathered in front of a UN office in central Beirut, waving a banner in English that read: "West(ern) Democracy + Arab Silence = Massacre of Palestinian Children."

Palestinians marching though the Yarmouk refugee camp on the outskirts of Damascus challenged Arab governments for not doing enough, and praised terrorists who attack Israel. "Arab leaders sitting on your chairs, a suicide bomber makes us proud," some 700 protesters chanted.

In Cairo, 3,000 worshippers gathered at the call of the Muslim Brotherhood in Al-Azhar Mosque, the Sunni Muslim world's most prestigious theological institute.

"One generation after another, we'll keep on saying it: we don't recognize Israel," chanted the worshippers during their one-hour protest. Another Brotherhood demonstration in the northern port city of Alexandria drew some 2,000 people.

Separately, thousands of Islamist students have been protesting in Egyptian universities, condemning the IDF Gaza offensive.

More than 50 people were killed in Gaza during the military offensive, which aimed at preventing Palestinian militants from firing rockets at Israel.

The Brotherhood is technically illegal in Egypt, but the group has 88 lawmakers sitting in parliament as independents. Several could be seen leading the protests Friday.

The political arm of the Muslim Brotherhood movement in Jordan, the Islamic Action Front, held banners in the Amman protest calling for support to the "Lebanese and Syrian resistance to American threats."

Jordanian organizers said authorities in this staunchly U.S.-allied country had allowed them to protest on the Palestinian issue, but that they had felt compelled to broaden their calls.

"The protest did not change course, it reflected the anger of the Arabs against all those practices, whether against Saddam, Hamas or the Palestinian people," said Wael al-Saqa, an Islamist activist and the head of the engineers association.

Palestinian refugees in Lebanon also held a rally supporting Hamas, the Islamic Jihad and other radical groups in Ein el-Hiweh, Lebanon's largest camp on the outskirts of the southern port city of Sidon.
