Gaydamak tries to pay gay parade organizers to opt for new location
By DPA

In a sign of growing opposition to Friday's scheduled gay pride parade in Jerusalem, Russian-Israeli billionaire Arkadi Gaydamak has offered to pay for the event to be relocated to another city, a spokeswoman for the organizers of the event said Wednesday.

"He didn't succeed," she said, but would not divulge the sum Gaydamak offered to pay the organizers to move the parade.

Violent protests against the proposed parade continue, with ultra-Orthodox Jews taking to the streets nightly in Jerusalem and other Israeli cities with large religious populations.

On Tuesday night, a group attacked and stoned Jerusalem Mayor Uri Lupolianski, himself an Ultra-Orthodox Jew who has also called for the parade to be cancelled.

Police had to escort the mayor out of a banquet hall in Jerusalem's ultra-Orthodox Mea Shearim neighborhood, after he was pelted with stones by angry anti-march demonstrators.

The Supreme Court is slated to meet later Wednesday to debate three petitions against the parade, filed by right-wing and ultra-Orthodox activists, and backed by a government minister.

Police have already forced the organizers of the march to change its route, and will deploy 12,000 officers to safeguard the event, after opponents threatened violence if it goes ahead.
