Israel Navy's Hanit missile ship. (IDF Spokesman's Office)

Probe: IDF ship hit by Hezbollah missile had malfunctioning radar
By Amos Harel, Haaretz Correspondent

The results of an Israel Defense Forces probe released Tuesday show that the radar on an Israel Navy vessel struck four months ago by a Hezbollah missile had been malfunctioning at the time of the attack.

Earlier findings of the probe showed that the ship's crew had not been given sufficient intelligence information warning of a potential attack. The IDF has still not decided what course of action, if any, will be taken against the personnel responsible for the crew's lack of preparation, which cost the lives of four soldiers.

The probe, conducted by a special committee under the supervision of Brigadier General (Res.) Nir Maor, found that senior naval officers had not taken into account the possibility of an Iranian missile reaching Hezbollah's arsenal, despite defense warnings to prepare accordingly for such a threat.

Aside from lack of intelligence information, the radar on the ship had been functioning at less than 50 percent accuracy at the time of the attack. In addition, the officer responsible for electronic devices on the ship had decided to turn off the "Barak" anti-missile defense system, which was designed to intercept Iranian missiles.

The officer justified his decision by saying he had worried than an overuse of the system would affect its functioning in case of attacks during the course of the operation. He did not report the malfunctioning radar to the ship's captain, nor did he inform the captain of his decision to shut off the defense system.

The IDF said in a statement, "the investigation shows that despite the fact that there was no specific intelligence regarding the weapons held by Hezbollah, there was certain information received by the Israeli Navy in the past, which could have lead to the operational assumption of a possibility that the enemy holds coastal ammunition."

"Accordingly, it would have been advisable to operate in a way that would precede this threat," added the statement
