Abbas: Israel agreed to prisoner release before Shalit kidnapping
By Haaretz Service and The Associated Press

Palestinian Authority Chairman Mahmoud Abbas said Tuesday that Israel had agreed before the abduction of an Israeli soldier this summer that it would release Palestinian prisoners.

Abbas told reporters he had been told by Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert he would be "surprised" by the number of prisoners Israel was willing to release.

However, the discussions on possible releases stopped after Hamas-allied militants kidnapped an Israeli soldier in June, Abbas said.
